When the war broke out, he volunteered and became chaplain of the Volunteers of the West under General Henri de Cathelineau. In his memoirs, the latter insists on praising the heroic conduct of the brave Abbé Houssay. Having broken with Rome in 1885, he joined the Gallican Church of France. After making peace with his bishop, the latter appointed him parish priest of Pont-de-Ruan in Touraine, where he found an old \"benedictional\" from which he would draw the raw material for his future books.
